Its surroundings, color, shape and size. They can either have all of these characteristics or just a few.

Some of the characteristics of a shed are incorporated into the design. Windows play a large part in its look and feel. Placing a window box under the window will help it look like it is older then it is. The plants can then drape over to add to the character. The door of the shed usually becomes the focal point of the shed, sometimes the angle of the door will invite people to come in.

Think of the old pictures of cobblestone streets and winding walkways. There is more character and feel in the surrounding landscape sometimes then the look of the structure itself. Placing plants that climb the walls of your shed and flowers planted around the walkways will go far when they grow and cover the ground.
Nestling a shed in the corner of the yard encompassed with overhanging trees and plants is a good way to infuse charm into your shed.

Finally consider the size, although large wooden garden sheds can have plenty of charm they can override the surrounding backyard. A small quaint outdoor shed does have more ability to give you a better feel of an old world structure, not only that but if your yard is small you can have more room to create a better backyard.
