Searching for Used Wooden Sheds | Used Storage Sheds
If the need for a new shed exists, then let’s not under-estimate the value of used wooden sheds. Basically what brings value to a shed is its structural integrity. It must perform its function of storing items preferably off of the ground, protecting items from outdoor elements and securing the items while complimenting the aesthetic properties of the property on which it sits.
Before the agreement is made, inspect the shed from the base to the ridge, in that order. If there are problems with the base, then chances are, the shed will prove problematic when it comes time to relocate. The deal-breaker will be signs of insect infestation at the base. Termites will cause the most amount of structural damage. Hornets and wasps commonly build their nests on the ceiling, eaves, ridge and vents of a shed. They pose no structural threat, but could be problematic as the movement process begins. Also, assess the level of mold and mildew present. These are the first signs of decay. A thin coat of black mold can be washed off with a bleach and water solution. Some exterior wash detergents will include ingredients such as sodium hydrochloride to assist in treating mold and mildew. Assess levels of rot in the wooden members of the shed. Base lumber should be pressure-treated #2 southern-yellow pine. This grade is used in the construction of exterior decks and is rated for ground contact. Warpage can be accommodated. Splits, cracks or checks will warrant replacing. Some wooden sheds are constructed of truss-like frames with treated lumber as the bottom cord. If these frames are a component of the shed, they do not necessarily need to be dismantled. Cord-joints should be inspected to make sure they are adequately fastened with truss-plates.
If the shed is going to be relocated, as is without dismantling, install interior braces from the top wall-plate to opposing bottom floor-plate. Install braces to both wall-studs adjacent to interior corners. Consider using ratchet-straps around the upper and lower circumferences after bracing is installed. Cheap economy grade lumber can be used for this purpose. Small wooden garden sheds are easier to relocate because of the size , larger ones a little more difficult. Upon approaching the lumber counter, specify ‘one-by-four or six, number-three grade, ponderosa-pine. As long as you’re at the lumber counter, shop out the shed to consider the savings you’ve made and also look at your options when it comes time to replace roofing, and siding. Visit the paint department to consider retaining over handling marks for a fresh new look.
